Where We Are

Please note that the details & directions on this page are now obsolote & will soon be updated. Thank you.

The Alternative Baker is a storefront retail bakery in the Rondout section, or historic waterfront strand, in Kingston, New York. It was here in the Hudson Valley region, about two hours north of Manhattan, that the retail spot opened in December 1997 to serve the neighborhood and Ulster County community. It is a small storefront of only 660 square feet with the original pressed tin ceiling painted a warm Cezanne ochre. The streetscape is a 19th century shopping and walking district with old gas-style lamps and a beautifully landscaped waterfront park.

Once filled with the hustle and bustle of commerce as the Rondout Creek is the terminus for the D & H Canal (for over one-hundred years it connected the coal mines of Pennsyvania to the industrial revolution of New York City). The Rondout, as it is known, is now filled with restaurants and boutiques. it is a busy harbor for sailing boats and pleasure craft of all sorts. During the warmer months, Hudson River boaters fill the cafes and bakery with their boat shoes and tales of traveling the world’s waterways.

Because the bakery is so intimate, once inside the glass door, the customer is greeted with the smells of a grandmother’s kitchen--wafting cinnamon, melting butter or the pungent aroma of garlic roasting in focaccia--genuine old-fashioned bakery fragrance.
